  • Yoga therapy according to the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) is “the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga”. IAYT is the Educational Standards for the Training of Yoga Therapists.

Yoga Therapy is a psychosomatic approach that employs a bottom-up technique to empower individuals. It offers customized tools designed for lifelong use, helping you achieve your personal goals.

During your session, different yoga tools are used to provide you with a tailor made and customized self practice that that you can safely do at home. This practice is specifically designed for your condition/s to help you live a healthy and fulfilling life.

  • Although all yoga is potentially therapeutic and healing, IAYT-certified yoga therapists specifically apply yoga tools—postures/exercises, breath-work, meditation techniques, and more—to address an individual‘s physical, mental, and emotional needs. Many people first learn about yoga through its physical practices, and a common misconception is that the discipline is all about stretching or movement. In fact, yoga therapy can help people who can't move at all, as well as active individuals!

The yoga model of health is unique because it addresses every aspect of life rather than considering each body part or system separately.

  • Yoga Therapy works by using a bottom up approach with psychosomatic healing tools; meaning that it works on mental, physical and energetic aspects.

  • With consistent practice, you’ll begin to experience the transformative effects of yoga therapy. This is why committing to your home practice—just 10 to 20 minutes a day—is essential for unlocking its full benefits.

  • Usually the self practice takes from 10 to 15 minutes at home. The tools used are breathing, movements, meditation and yoga nidra.

  • I understand that your schedule is busy, which is why I tailor your home practice to fit your lifestyle. We’ll create flexible options—short, effective practices for busy days and longer ones when you have more time. There will also be variations for when you’re feeling tired or energized, ensuring that your practice is both manageable and beneficial, no matter how packed your day is.

  • Yoga therapy is typically offered as private one-on-one sessions. It is only conducted in a group setting when all participants share the same condition, and such sessions are clearly advertised as group-based.

FAQs About Yoga Therapy for Scoliosis

  • The sessions are designed for complete beginners as well as experienced yogis. The session main goal is to let you understand your own curve and what your body needs.

We start first by relaxing and releasing poses and then we move slowly to more strengthening postures; which by the 3rd week, you will be able to do even if you are a complete beginner. Also, there is always a variation for the poses so we don’t have to go into the full pose from the 1st time.

Most of the poses that help to elevate the pain are restorative poses; which are based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, relying on several props to relax the muscles. Meaning, it is all about slowing down and opening your body through passive stretching where your muscles are allowed to relax deeply. It's a unique feeling because props, rather than your muscles, are used to support your body.

So if you don’t have any yoga experience, you will benefit from it and will be able to do the poses.

Also, if you have yoga experience it will be a new experience to feel the muscles movement and relaxation using the props.

  • The postures that we do during the sessions are slow paced and customized for all age groups. There is always a variation if there are any challenges in any posture and we build the strength together throughout the sessions in a slow and considerate method.

  • As mentioned above, the programs are suitable for all age groups; however, to ensure that the young person understand the postures and do them correctly on their own, it is advised that one of the parents attends the sessions with their kid and in that case booking is done as private sessions so the parent can ask all the questions they want to be able to better help their kid and help them to develop their home practice routine.

  • Yes, the programs are intended for someone with a fused spine as well. The postures we do during the workshop will be adjusted accordingly to make sure everything is practiced safely and to get the best out of the yoga practice.

  • The current yoga therapy sessions are specifically designed to support individuals with scoliosis in managing their condition. However, I truly appreciate your dedication to helping your students! I’ll be offering specialized programs in the future tailored for yoga teachers and trainers who want to learn how to better support students with scoliosis. Stay connected, and I’ll keep you updated when these programs become available.

  • It is great that you don’t feel any pain, this means that you are doing the needed to maintain the balance in the muscles and not overworking one side over the other. These sessions will help you to understand exactly what you are doing right so you can continue doing it and avoid any future activity that might put any strain on the back so you can maintain a healthy spine.

  • I have been practicing yoga as well but without the specific adjustment for Scoliosis for several years and it was of great help to me when I started to adjust my practice for my curve. It felt even better and I started to understand more my body. I used to get frustrated when I don’t reach a certain pose but when I understood the curve, it helped to adopt a different approach for challenging postures and work on them slowly in different ways to achieve them without injuring my back and without putting pressure on the spine.

  • These sessions are intended to help you in developing your own practice at home. it is like a journey, we will need at least 4 sessions to develop your complete practice as we take it gradually and during each session, you will understand more your curve and understand as how how to adjust in your daily activities including how your sit, how your sleep and how you walk. It depends from one person to another but generally to get the full benefits of the sessions, you will need at least 4 sessions that can be taken over 2 months.
The daily practice are customized based on your lifestyle so if you have little time to practice on daily basis, we find a way that suits you and the practice can be as short as a 10 mins daily practice.

  • The therapy sessions are customized based on each individual need and each individual curve. Not all scoliosis cases are the same and that is why in each posture we take time to explore and adjust for different patterns and in some cases the adjustment that would work with someone with a right thoracic curve for example would not work with someone else with the same curve. So during the session, I help you to listen and understand what you body needs by exploring different adjustment methods that would work for best for you.

  • My programs are not intended to reverse the curve but they help you to feel more aligned and balanced by working on the right muscles for scoliosis.

In yoga therapy with Scoliosis, it is up to each individual to work on themselves to see the progress. Meaning, to be able to feel any progress, you need to commit on doing yoga on regular basis by attending yoga classes or, if you attend the 3 weeks workshop to practice at home on regular basis and not only to depend on attending the programs.

The program goal is to help you develop a home practice and help you to self adjust when you attend any yoga class so it is up to each individual to continue working on themselves to see any progress.

It is also important to have an X-ray check up every 6 months or annually to make sure the exercises you are doing are actually beneficial and to monitor your curve.
